How Goal Setting can Help Your Kids

Ever thought about Goal Setting for Kids? Goal setting is one of the most important skills that a person can learn, and the earlier this skill is learned, the more chances there are for successful outcomes in a person’s life. Adults know that goal setting is all about planning, making progress with that plan and reaching final goals or achievements. Once a child learns how to do this, they can use this tool for more success in school and at home.

Goal setting for kids will help your children to do well on their school tests and in activities such as sports, music programs or outside academic or arts programs – even at home, and with their personal finances. Teaching your child how to be a goal setter will give them a sense that they are capable of whatever they want to do. That’s valuable!

How to help your child be a goal setting child

Goal setting for children is basically the same as for adults, with a few caveats. Because they are young, and not as emotionally or cognitively developed, goals should be smaller and more tangible. The idea with goal setting for kids is to get them started in the life-long frame of mind for thinking, planning and taking action to achieve results. The basic premises of goal setting remain the same. You can help your child learn to set goals by working through these steps with him:

Ask, “What do you want to achieve?” – Help your child describe in specific terms something he would like to do that will take some work/planning (getting an A on his next math test, earning money to purchase a certain kind of bicycle).

Ask, “How will you get there?” – Help him plan out the steps to take and the mini-goals to reach on his way to the ultimate goal.

Establish accountability – Have your child write down what he wants to achieve and what his plan for getting there is. He can read it each day to help him with personal accountability, and he can share it with you, or another trusted adult to help him stay motivated, inspired and on-track.

Achieve – Achievement is not only for the final outcome, but also for the small goals that are met along the way.

Review plan/goals/outcomes – Throughout the process and at the end as well, review with your child the plan and how it is going. Do adjustments need to be made? How does he feel about his progress and where it is leading? How was the goal setting experience for him?

If your child does not reach his ultimate goal, talk to him about what he learned on the way. He still has learned valuable lessons about planning and goal setting, and he’s probably learned about himself. Encourage him to not give up on dreams that are important to him, but that if one plan doesn’t work, he has to revise the plan and try again.

Teaching your child to be a goal setting child is one of the best things you can do.

In the western corporate world it is nowadays quite common for employees to take a more active role with their manager in creating their own personal and career development plans. When I first started doing early versions of these plans nearly 20 years ago, the emphasis was more on my training and development — very rarely did it involve setting a work goal of any consequence. This article describes four key elements of the setting and completion of a work goal.

Even though much organizational training and development expertise goes into setting up and maintaining employee career development and performance review programs, the onus is still fairly and squarely on you to figure out how to make optimal use of them. What frequently happens is that employees leave everything until they get a warning reminder e-mail from their manager; and they then rush to enter goals and objectives into the system before some looming cutoff date. This is a recipe for disaster because in their haste they will be tempted to enter poorly thought out goals in order to meet the deadline. Or even worse, to add too many goals in order to somehow impress the various managers who hold the promotion, salary or bonus keys. And remember – the unwritten secret of all corporate performance review systems is that 50% of the essential goals, projects and effort that actually arise in any given year will not be on anyone’s radar at the start of the year — simply because they haven’t come into existence yet. So it is definitely in the employee’s best interests to have a minimum number of concise goals, rather than a mishmash of weakly conceived ones.

What if you understand the message in the preceding paragraph but still struggle in coming up with appropriate work goals? The key word here is probably “alignment”. Whatever goals you create should be in alignment with both your own vision of your career and life, and also with that of the organization itself. If you’re fortunate, your company will be one that has clear and well communicated statements of what it is about, all the way from boardroom down to divisional and perhaps also departmental level. Should that not be the case, then you will need to do some discrete investigations of what is expected from you – perhaps from other departmental managers who do know what is going on. For example, you can set a long-term study goal of finishing your degree in four years. In order to reach that goal, you set short-term goals like setting aside a number of hours each day to study or passing the weekly quizzes or getting good grades in your exams.

Your study goals should be measurable. In other words, you need to provide parameters by which your goals can be gauged. For example, you can say, “In the next exam, I should aim for this grade,” or “By the end of this week, I should finish writing my paper.” Student Goal Setting Research

You know that setting goals is essential to your success. Having a goal in mind and developing a plan of action to achieve that goal is a core skill for successful people. It can be intimidating to figure out how to take a goal from an abstract desire into a concrete plan for achievement, however.

This is where it helps to create a goal setting worksheet tailored to your needs. Think of it like a template. When you decide upon your goals for the month, the quarter, the year, or even for your life, you can come to your template worksheet and put your goal down. You can work through each section and you’ll come away with a concrete action plan to achieve your goal.

Like most plans, you’ll need to work on them and sometimes make revisions. But working through a goal worksheet to create a real action plan can be a powerful motivator to help you get started on achieving all that you desire.

Here’s an outline for a possible goal-setting worksheet. Take this and use it as you work through planning a few goals. You can modify this template into a worksheet you’ll use each time you go through a goal planning session. Goal Setting Worksheet

1. Begin your goal planning by visualizing your goal in vivid detail. Picture what it will look like when you’ve met your goal. Think about how you’ll feel. You can write or type this description into your worksheet. Reading back over it as you work on your goal will be helpful.

2. Create an affirmation. Write out an affirmation related to your goal. Add it to your list of daily affirmations so you develop belief in your ability to achieve your goal.

3. Make a list of the benefits you’ll gain from achieving your goal. This may seem obvious, but it can be really helpful in motivating you to work through your goal and complete it.

4. Analyze where you are now. You need to know exactly where you’re starting from before you can get where you’re going. Honestly looking at where you are now can help you identify things you need to do to where you want to be. Goal Setting Worksheet

5. Set a deadline. Deadlines are important. Decide when you want to reach your goal. Keep this date in mind as you’re planning and taking action on your plans. Remember, if your deadline comes and goes you set a new deadline. Never give up.

6. List your obstacles. What is standing between you and your goal? What things do you need to overcome? What resources do you need to gather?

7. What information do you need, and what kind of help will you need? Do you need to learn something new to be able to meet your goal? Will you require the help or knowledge of others? This is the time to write down those things.

8. Finally, make your plan. Take everything that you’ve written out in your worksheet and bring it together in a plan that you can follow step-by-step. Include actions to take in the short-term and the long term. Your initial plan may be rough – and that’s OK. It will become clearer and clearer as you go along, and may take some unexpected turns. Are you using a goal setting worksheet? There are many different versions of those kinds of worksheets out there, yet that very abundance of ideas can pose a challenge. Not every worksheet is right for every person.

It helps if you know how you plan to use them — because once you know that, you’ll also know which ones are the most suitable for you — and even how to make your own. So go ahead and read on to discover the key ways to use them.

They’re a great resource for every part of the goal setting process, from figuring out your core values to mapping up your goals all the way to creating the individual action steps. So here are the five key ways to use such a worksheet as you go through the goal setting process:

1) Determine your core values

Write down your main values, and then whittle them down by crossing out the ones that are somewhat negotiable — until you’re left with your top five or so values that you can’t live without. Then order those from 1 to 5.

2) Match your values up with your goals

Figure out what you want and then check if your tentative goals are in alignment with your core values. If they’re not, try another goal or find ways to make the goal fit better with your core values. Be sure to be honest here. Don’t kid yourself. Goal Setting Worksheet Template

3) Make your goals seductive

Write down the things you’ll get to enjoy when you have achieved your goals. Think about them in great detail, in sensory terms, one at a time. Make each of them come alive. Taste it, smell it, and imagine what it will fell to have what you’re working towards. You can even add a checklist for creating reminder note cards that you can take with you wherever you go.

4) Cut your goals down to size

What does that mean? It means that you create specific action steps for each of them. Remember that famous Chinese quote about the 1000 mile road that begins with the first step? That’s what you should aim for. Write down a first step for each of your goals. Then another one. Then another one. Write as many as you can think of — but don’t stress out if you can’t think of more than the first one or two. The third step will become obvious once you have completed step one and two.

5) Schedule your first steps

On the last goal setting worksheet you should schedule your action steps. In fact, make it a checklist where you can cross off the steps you have taken. And even though it’s not a worksheet, don’t ignore your calendar. Whatever you use, a PDA or an old-fashioned Week-at-a-Glance calendar — schedule your steps, and you’ll be on your way.
